Accountancy degree an advantage?

I'm a prospective undergraduate and have been offered a single Business degree programme, which means I'll receive a Bachelor of Business degree at the end of my course.

However, I've heard that having an additional Accountancy degree would be a bonus as many firms and businesses look for potential candidates with such a degree.

Should I take up a double degree programme including both Business and Accountancy?

Actually, I think having two degrees will make you a pretty attractive candidate over someone who just has one. More people are starting to complete two degrees in business because it helps to push them way ahead of the curve.

I agree with AnonaMoss. Not only does taking Accounting help you to be ahead of the curve, but it can also significantly help you should you run your own business in the future.

Your course is already very legitimate if you want to become a businessman but I would agree that accountancy degree is really an advantage. Managing business is a hard thing to do and you need to have an accountancy's knowledge to manage your business in the future. A need for an accountant will settle in during the time when you are making profit already am i right?

Well, if you can better jobs, you can try to get this degree too. Otherwise I don't see the use. I don't have to get all the degrees possible to run a business. I need to run the business and, if needed HIRE people to work for me. The reason I actually have an accountant and I hire various freelancers for the jobs I don't have the time or willingness to do anymore. I know people who run business and know almost nothing from their 'specialty', but make good money because they are good leaders and know how to properly run their 'show'

Good points dojo. I think more degrees are desirable because it seems like everyone has a degree so this will really help you stand apart from the other applicants. If it doesn't put you in too much of a financial hole then I say go for it.

Well if it helps you with your on going future, then yes you should definitely take advantage of it! Remember, it may only be a once in a lifetime chance!

In my personal opinion, it would depend on what you look forward to doing in your future. If you are planning to run your own business, I don't think you even need one of these degrees. Because making a business successful doesn't call for number of degrees. It just requires you to be a leader, to possess the qualities of a leader. My uncle is quite a successful business man and by education, he is masters in Solid state physics which as you can see doesn't have anything to do with the business world. But still, he manages to do great work between business people because he does possess leader qualities. On the contrary, if you plan to be a part of firm and work for someone elses business, then you don't plan to be anything more than a job candidate. And so, your degrees are going to give u a huge edge over the other candidates. This is basically the reason why many people today look forward to get an additional degree in accounting which gets their resume to the top of the rack. So consider your choices and options well before deciding anything.

@ WajeehBJ, couldn't agree more. I have studied the Letters and prepared to be a teacher for 9 years (high-school + college). I worked for 10 years as a radio DJ and again didn't have a diploma in Journalism, but learnt everything as I went. Have learnt web design by myself and now I am running a successful business as a web designer. Am teaching myself all kinds of Economics stuff to better manage my firm, but again, I have no formal education. You need to be a good leader and business man, for everything else there's people to be hired

Great examples! Yeah, formal education is not neccessary, but we'd be totally overlooking things to say it doesn't matter at all. Yes, we can hire people to do our dirty work, but I like to also like to know how things work. What if an employee decides to leave the company, then you'd be kind of stuck. While it's not neccessary, I think that if the original poster has the opportunity to get two degrees he should go for it.
