It depends on where you are located. Check your local state laws, you may not have to but safe is better than sorry. What kind of a product are you trying to sell?

I am not really sure too. I guess majority of people who sells products that are homemade do have licence. Just be sure that you made it you own. Also consider what products are you selling. If it is just some homemade cupcakes or muffins, I don't think that you will need licence to sell it. Maybe when you are selling beauty products, a drug or something like that, that's where you could consider a professional advice.

I think that so long as your product isn't dangerous in any way, you should be able to sell it from your home without any problems. However, again, everyone who has posted previously citing how it depends on your product is absolutely correct. For example, electronic cigarettes are starting to become more popular. And as a result, there are some home based businesses who are selling the devices along with their own brand of homemade nicotine liquid. Right now in the UK and the US this is not illegal, but you can bet that Big Tobacco will eventually grease enough politicians to get them to pass a law against it on the basis that nicotine is a poison. So not only should you be mindful of your product, you should also be mindful of the political landscape involved with it before you start marketing it in earnest.

You're not going to need a license to sell home made goods on the internet, in all honesty that seems ludicrous in my opinion. As long as you maintain quality service as well as quality product you will do just fine.

True about the Cottage Home Law. If you're selling food you should see if your state has this. If your state doesn't have this I know that you can make a petition, and get others to sign it. Also in the US anything that you make a profit of more than $600 then you have to pay taxes on it.

Selling online don't need a license mostly on home made things. License only apply in verbal legal matter negotiation and if it involves high risk of living, selling online is still free for everyone in good purposes.

I used to sell handmade jewlery and other bits and I didn't need a license - I started on eBay and eventually moved on to my own website. I would definitely recommend doing some market research first, I went in a little blind - my jewlery making had never been more than a hobby. However, the handmade items market is pretty saturated, mainly with people who are trying to make a quick buck.

I know for me I was supposed to have a state tax license in the US. However, I just got a letter in the mail telling me they are revoking my license because I did not make any sales for the past three quarters which were taxable. Like it is my fault that no one in Ohio is buying my products to give them tax money. So they decided to suspend my license. This means I will just have to sell online and avoid selling in Ohio.

You don't need a license to operate a storefront on a forum that already exists, like etsy, ebay, Craigslist or Amazon. Plenty of people sell items through this channel without intending to have a license. If you want to start you own website, you will need your jurisdiction laws on running a business and taxes. You will probably need to register as a legal entity, such as an LLC. Selling things on Craigslist for cash, though, isn't a big deal. You'll just need to report the income as a sole proprietor and pay taxes.

I think that once again, it depends on where you live. Country laws and state laws differ and there are all sorts of laws out there that dictate what you can and cannot do legally. I think it also depends on your volume...but at the end of the day it boils down to taxes. If you are selling stuff, your local municipality is going to want their share in terms of taxes...and many will require that you register for a business license in order to keep tabs on you for this purpose.
