I think you're confusing a copyright with a trademark - the latter costs money to register, since it's then individual to your company and may not be used without your permission. It's a lot shorter than written work, though, which is automatically copyrighted.

There is no official registration process in the UK.
However it can be difficult to prove the copyright in cases of written works and music which have not been published.
There are some registration companies around but in my opinion they are a bit of a con because even if I register it with them, it is not guaranteed that this is actually my work or that someone else has not done the same.
