It is a good idea, but it will require a ton of work. I know for me I have never thought about doing this before, because my own sites have a ton of work already! So hopefully your idea goes well for you and can be a great success.
I think it's a great idea. I would lean more towards a site for children, especially the pre-schoolers. I notice that a lot of parents look for information to help their children before they head off to kindergarten. If you create a really colorful site, with videos that are entertaining to children you may be on to something. Just yesterday, I watched a children's Spanish video on Youtube that helps the to learn the days of the week. The woman used a puppet, and she made a song. I learned the days of the week in order after watching the video once.
This topic has sparked off an idea in my head. Instead of doing the usual education site, how about one that's dedicated to home schooling? Parents who do home schooling need a lot of resources. Maybe start off with one subject first. Choose a subject that you are really good at. Then find other people to add other subjects that they are good at.
How about that?
it's interesting enough. But may i ask? How will you gain any profit from this? Advertising? Or you're just opening a voluteer teaching site? And the teaching system? using MSN,other chat software or directly from the site? In my opinion, i think you can give education but to only to some kind of level or in a period of time. After your site has gain some reputation, make some level of education needs some payment and the higher the level, the higher the cost either. I'm only thinking from "how to earn money". Hope this will help you improving your site and gain many earnings.
PS: i can speak some japanese... if you'd like to give them some basic lesson in Japan language, i may help a little!
Not to burst your bubble, but if you do a simple search in google for Online Education, these are the results -- About 2,020,000,000 results (0.28 seconds) -- that's a heck of a lot of competition!!
Start there, but then start narrowing your search by adding modifiers in front of 'online education' - then see what the numbers say from there. When you find a niche that has less than 4 zeros, then consider it!
For example, if you modify with 'homeschooling online education' then you get the results - About 8,740,000 results (0.36 seconds) -- better, but still fairly large.
Type in 'free' in front of that and you get even more! About 8,820,000 results (0.31 seconds) - strange, I know!
So, basically you really have to know what the competition is out there before you spend a lot of time creating something that is already there.
Hope this helps!

Too saturated a niche - won't be successful.
Indeed, Education is everywhere and it is usually expensive. So the idea of online education and a site focused on online education could work.
But as many before me asked, you would need to have a little bit more of an idea about what the site will be about, who are your customers, how do you get support for it, How to have pay for itself ?
If you could disclose a little bit more, we can probably help you ...
Well ... Adaam discovered a bit about searching! An Online business owner needs to know the basics of being online, searching so that you can find information correctly & quickly and a bit about HTML and webdesign even if you have a web creation software so that you can understand how the site is put together and how best to enhance or fix it.
Maybe I should put together a 'down & dirty guide for online business owners' so you have a blueprint of the basics that you need ... what do you think? I'm in the process of putting together a computer basics book that is not like any of the books out there ... more like a "this is what no one told you that you needed to know about computers' - book! Doing computer consulting I've seen so many people get into trouble with their computer and on the Internet, simply because they didn't take the time to learn the basics!
I had and older female client, who's computer was riddled with spyware, tell me that "Oh no, I simply COULDN'T have any of that on MY computer ... I ONLY go to 3 sites online!!" Well, 2 sites were golfing sites (safe enough) ... the third site?? ... a right wing nut job who's site was simply verbose commentary on the state of the country and the world and LINKS to articles on other sites to back up his rants! So, I said to her ... "Did you click on any of the links on his site?" "Of course I did!" "Then, mam', you've been to hundreds of other sites and that's where they came from!"
Just one example of what happens when you operate a computer without a "license"! LOL!
