I use free Avast on my Windows computers and I have never had a problem, nor any false positives like someone else had mentioned.

I'm personally using AVG now ever since I gave up on Norton 360 since it just slows down my entire computer at start-up. I realise that Norton just has too many modules that needs to boot up at my computer's start-up slowing everything down! The problem with it is that even after you delete the software, remnants of it will definitely be present either as undeletable files or hidden files which really irritates me. I'll never be going with Norton again! AVG is doing fine for me currently, but I've heard that Avast is much better so I am rather inclined towards trying that out since I really need my computer to run faster.

If you're internet-savvy and you've got good adblockers, you really shouldn't need anything more than Microsoft Security Essentials. If you feel like you need something more, go with Avast or AVG, preferably the former.

I have great experiences with McAfee and AVG.

I'm not too sure about Norton though, It cause my old computer to become a total wreck.

Norton, for sure, is the best for me. They also have an excellent Facebook app and offer specials and upgrades via Facebook. I've used Norton ever since my family got a virus in 1999 and we had to find software to fix and take care of it. I've never bothered with any other program since. Norton is the best.

I also use the free version of Avast, it seems pretty good so far. However, it seems to like to terminate files based on suspicions of being infected. So sometimes I have to turn it off when I know its a false positive. It also seems to have some weird problems where it corrupts some of my downloads.

Avast and Kaspersky are probably the two most reliable AVs.

Avast being free helps its case though.
