I generated an online presence before I even had my company up and running. I put up conceptual art, our about me page and even had polls going to see what types of services people would want to see from us. We also had a Twitter contest to get people to sign up for our newsletter and it did help us get a lot of followers on Twitter and likes on Facebook. It's never too soon to start building your brand.

    Great advice from everyone.

Lucy says it simplest - It's never too early.

When I did my first site, I kinda expected instantly to get hundreds of thousands of visitors. Didn't happen.
Now I set out a timetable, and make sure to do a little of the 'grind' work each day. Can be a painful process, but once you get over constantly checking for each and every new follower or hit, if you're providing some good content, the numbers will rise.

Yep, I just let mine tick over in the background and don't pay it much mind. The numbers seem to rack up gradually.

This is a great thread. Thank you VanCleef for bumping this thread. There are a lot of great tips in this thread. I'm just starting to promote my ebooks and this thread is invaluable.

I'd recommend getting an account set up and then searching for other in your niche. Start following their followers, once they see that you are relevant to them a good portion of these people will follow you back, giving you a really tight audience to start engaging with.

I'd also suggest that Pinterest may be a worthwhile place for you, if you are making a product for weddings, you will find a massive audience there who love to share images of accessories and similar. You can just get yours to link back to your website for more info!

I'd say you should definitely start generating some buzz and hype ahead of time. At the very least, it'll get the people curious about what's to come. Then when you start your business you'll have somewhat of a customer base on spot.

Hi Sarah. I think you have a point here. But I don't think there's a right and wrong here. Perhaps it depends on what kind of business we're talking about. Social Media is an incredible new tool all business should absolutely be using nowadays. If you don't have it all figured out yet, perhaps it's a good time to learn everything you can. Once you think we have what it takes, then start using these tools. Don't worry so much if your business is still in the designing stages. What matters is that you will get there, and then your Social Media Strategy will be in place to help you get to where you want to go!

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here, Sarah. What worked for my business, may not be what will work for yours. We can never know these things. What I'll say is that Social Media is an amazing tool that all new and old businesses can benefit from. I wouldn't worry too much if you start using it before or after you open your business. With Social Media, what matters is creating a presence and having good and interesting content to share with your followers. Hope this helped.

Totally agree with you in regards to the 'grind work.' This is the stuff that you can easily put off for days that will be the major setback in building your site/presence. If you don't do it every day then you will find you have hours of it you need to do just to get back on a level pegging.

Also, really agree with you in relation to visitors, I have a nasty habit of checking analytics incessantly and it just isn't necessary; at least not until you have plenty of great content out there and more coming through. Seeing poor levels of traffic can defeat you before you've even got close to where you need to be content-wise.
