Avast as a lot of people said is probably the best for free antivirus software. I've used just about everything and I find that Avast has worked the best for me. I also like Norton but I feel like its just not as good as Avast. I've ran a scans on Norton and its come up with nothing. Just after I would run a scan with Avast and a few things would pop up. So I would say Avast is the best free antivirus software.

Since avast got the most recommendation, I have already downloaded it. Should it continue to be efficient for my computer protection, I shall remain with it. But if not, there is the button called uninstall . Thank you for the suggestions, but if you still have more to suggest feel free because I still have one laptop where an antivirus is needed. It still needs to be fixed though.

With all that said and done - If you really want to avoid viruses get a mac!
That's actually not true at all. Apple Mac devices get affected by viruses too! The recent retraction of Apple's claim that the Mac device is totally free from viruses reinforces my point. The only reason Apple has had little problem with viruses is that hackers/moders are looking for affecting the most machines, and most machines run on Windows, so it would be impractical to try to break down apple's defenses for little machines to affect.

I would recommend Avast. It is one of the best free anti-virus software out there. It has, indeed, saved my computer's *** when I downloaded a program that was filled with viruses. However, some other anti-virus software did not detect even a single virus! And Avast also has internet security, so that has helped me stay away from malicious websites.

Are you looking for a free or paid antivirus? If you are willing to pay, I would suggest based on price: Norton 360, it rounds out to about $18/year with this coupon: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/symantec.com or if price is not a big issue for you, Avast Internet Security.

avast! has a clean, user-friendly interface with solid virus protection, firewalls and my favorite tool 'SafeZone'.

I've been using (really using) 3 antivirus programs in my life. And I would rate them like that:

    1. Kasperky (2 years) (+never had any problems, fast, - price which is not that bad but still you have to pay for it)
    2. Avast (5 years) (+never had any problems, fast, free - none?)
    3. Norton (1 year) (+it worked -slow, would require my attention too often, price

I used them in that order: Norton -> Kaspersky -> Avast
Hence I'm talking here about older versions of Norton and Kaspersky, but it's the first impression that matters, right? At the moment I'm perfectly happy with avast and I have no reason to switch.
Better that any antivirus is your behaviour in the Internet:
    -use good passwords (long),
    -don't buy in dodgy shops,
-don't tick: "Save my credit card details for later",
-don't visit dodgy websites (avast has an add-on that shows you what people think about website you're on)
-don't click any links in emails that comes from people you don't know and people you know, but you are surprised they are sending you a link to vviagraa.com/itreallyworks
    -keep programs up to date
-use the latest browser possible (who's still using IE6.0?)
-if a deal looks too good it probably is scam (google it first and be careful with that, cause I've seen marketing of products where entire forums were created just to add some posts about how the product is good)
-don't reply to chain email and ask your friends not to forward them to you.
    -keep your email address private
-make sure to absolutely never use mailbox password with other services. That way if service is compromised (so they got your email and service password) they don't get your password to mailbox
I could go on and on with these

    Hope it helps!

My pc has a free anti virus installed, which was provided by my current ISP provider. However, it tends to slow my computer down too much and doesn't always pick up all viruses. I get all of my recommendations from one of the U.K's best selling computer magazines; Computeractive. Their online site is http://www.computeractive.co.uk. They review freeware programs and list them on their site in the download section.

One of my favourite anti malware programs is called Emsisoft anti malware; A multi award-winning duel scan engine. There's a 30 day free trial available, and every person you refer to them, nets you an extra 30 days each time someone downloads their trial version.

Emsisoft anti malware scans and cleans viruses, Rootkits, Worms, Trojans, Bots and Spyware. You can choose four different scan settings,"Deep scan" is the best option, which scans all files on all hard drives and takes around four hours to complete. The best way to use the program is to disconnect from the internet, start your computer in safe-mode and run a deep scan. Afterwards, you can quarantine and delete what's been found.
