Out side of real estate, I do a little marketing for local companies who have not gone on the web. One company is a pest control company who specializes in embarrassing issues like bed bugs and roaches pest control. How do you market on and off line for such a niche? Right now their sole advertising is an advert in a local paper.

This niche may seem embarrassing but I know if I had bed bugs or roaches or would LOVE for the name of a reliable company to come straight to my mind. First thing - they need a website, this should include personal info (how long they have been established etc), services offered, any special services offered (same day fumigation, public holiday cover etc). You can also have a reply form, where people can ask for more info, book a service etc. This web address needs to go in the advertisement, as well as on business cards. Past customers will tell them what kind of client they are most likely to work with - do a leaflet drop! A blog may be a good idea too - here they can include articles on different types of pests, how their services work, what poisons etc they use, how to spot you may have an infestation etc etc. Concentrate your sales angle on the fact the company can rid your home of unwanted visitors, rather than the horrible visitor themselves and people will see them in a positive, less embarrassing light. (does that make sense?) Good Luck.

I don't think this is embarrassing at all. The fact that these roaches and bed bugs are annoying. I'd probably just create videos of it bugging around the house and inserts the solutions to this problem along by promoting a product and services of this company. What is more embarrassing to me is promoting porn site.

Yeah, I don't see anything embarrassing either. The company is offering a very useful service to the community, there's nothing wrong with that. As far as marketing/promotion goes, maybe you could try doing something 'funny' like a facebook page with pictures of bugs being chased by 'ghostbusters' type men. Make the whole campaign based on something funny, if you have the resources you could even create a small app/game where the player shoots at bugs from their computer.

They should certainly think about expanding on their name and getting the word out so people are aware of them and can go to them to solve these issues. A Facebook page could be beneficial, so would making small pamphlets to hand out to people, why not!!

Bedbugs and roaches are really not that embarrassing and shouldn't be considered as being, unless the roaches are infesting one of Gordan Ramsey's kitchens or bedbugs in paris hiltons bed(that one is possible, though)then It wouldn't be embarrassing at all for most other businesses/people. Just a pest they need to eradicate, quickly.

I think this is a fantastic idea, Endirio - especially the Facebook page idea. I also think using humor is a good way to go, people may be embarrassed because they have an infestation and making light of it may make them choose this particular company over another.

As people have said, there are people out there that would look high and low for this kind of service. No embarrassment factor whatsoever. I'd imagine also that if you were a person affected by bedbugs that you would be willing to pay whatever the price to get rid of them.

Aside from the angles mentioned by other posters, you could go down the route of a micro niche site based on blog posts about the sort of thing people can do on their own at home to avoid the pest problem. This would get you ranking in Google for the keyword and give you an opportunity to sell the business in each post. Consider that most people accessing the site will be beyond the preventative measure stage but will still see your client as an authority on the subject.

Make sure to spend some time giving away information whilst also plugging the company with calls to action to get people submitting inquiries and picking up the phone!

Bed bugs aren't really that embarrassing because they can invade even the cleanest of homes. At to some extent, even the roaches issue isn't embarrassing because no matter how clean you are, if your neighbors aren't clean, you'll get them too eventually.

But you would market them online the same way you would any other online business.

I would say the business idea should not be considered embarrassing, they are offering a service that somebody in need will be desperate to get a good company in there. I have seen people advertise in the papers, advertise on the side of a company van and advertise in the phone book. The phone book is a must because somebody in need of the service is likely to look in the yellow pages or online. They should definitely have a website too and be listed in Google's local business. Maybe they can ask customers who are happy with their service to either write a review for them on Google local business or a testimonial. The possibilities are endless, but I wouldn't say it would be an embarrassing business. It is a valuable service!
