I have never had a true firewall. Although my router has build-in firewall, but the whole thing isn't a dedicated firewall hardware.

Is it necessary to have a dedicated hardware firewall?
Is the build-in firewall of typical good brand router enough to protect your home network?

It's necessary to be as protected and secure as you possibly can. While a hardware firewall isn't end all be all necessary, it doesn't hurt to have the added protection.

Its not necessary at all. There are lots of software available for it but if you think its not enough you can have it installed. It feel like its unnecessary for me because after all I don't think someone will actually get into my network.

I have tried software firewall, it is such pain in the back to use. I believe Commando was the one I tried. It kept asking me permission for everything I do...it's a pain. So I uninstalled it.

I would think that unless you are quite sure that your network is a potential target for hackers, a hardware firewall would just be a vestigial device. Admittedly, I am not privy to the kind of work that you do, and if you are responsible for a lot of client financial data, then the addition of a hardware firewall certainly wouldn't be a bad idea.

I don't think it is necessary unless you are at a high risk. I suppose it depends what you use the computer for. Sure, better safe than sorry, but most of them have annoying popups and take up a lot of room.
