How much return do you get on email newsletters (or print newsletters if you still do those)? On almost every e-commerce site and platform I see, there is an opt-in for email newsletters. But more than anything, it seems that people are annoyed with these and even consider them spam mail. How do you think we can make the most of an email newsletter tool?

First of you need to send out valuable information in your newsletters, not just a sales pitch. I have a few I am subscribed to and I have unsubscribed to the ones who are always trying to sell me something and I continue to open the ones that offer valuable information. I can respect the ones that are offering good information and then the next time they are trying to sell me something. I may not buy what they are selling, but I will continue to open their emails because I value the other information they usually provide.

I would say the best advice is to use your list to share information and do not sell something in every newsletter. You can gain your readers' trust respect and then start to sell a product every couple of newsletters. Do not sell on everyone tho. I could be wrong, but this is from my experience of being subscribed to many sites. I have even unsubscribed from some pretty big sites before because they were constantly selling me something.

I've used them in the past and never got any results. To be honest newsletters are a thing of the past, especially the forced/spammed ones where you just send information about stuff no one cares about to people who couldn't care less. I've stopped using the standard monthly newsletter, and implemented something similar to an RSS feed where people can subscribe and recieve info about products and new promotions.

Well I get a few responses back from customers using my newsletter feature. I just use it only once in a while though.

Newsletters work great for me. I provide mostly content. I hardly ever sell. I send it out every two weeks. I don't spam the heck out of my list. This is for my day job. I still building up my list for my online ventures.

I used to have a good return using newsletters and email marketing, but this was long time ago before spammers abused of this legitimate way to sell or advertise your products and service.

Actually a good opt-in newsletter campaign may bring good results, but it may take long time before you can build trustworthy among your readers and, to make this possible, it's necessary balance the newsletter with useful information besides the sales pitch.

Email Newsletters haven't brought me any decent business so far. I was thinking maybe it was because there are too many sources of information out now. Not to mention not many people like to sign up for mailing lists in the first place.

They are more so for collecting emails to use for marketing at a point later on.

This is something I am considering doing myself, I technically wouldn't be selling anything but as I would be writing the newsletter and I offer writing services, I guess each one would be like pitching my wares! I would provide just content though, I know from my own experience that the newsletters I open are content-rich and not selling me things. Having said that, I always usually buy something if I like a site's newsletter and what they have to offer.
