I use SEO, article marketing and press releases for my online business. I have only started using social networking. I wish I had started earlier, but better late than never.
The best way to promote your website would be doing proper white hat SEO process. The SEO process generally includes all social media marketing and other techniques such as link building and on page optimization.
These methods will bring more traffic to the targeted pages and will help convert it to customers.

Active participation on social site will give you feedback about your work and SEO work is the best tool to promote site. SEO has the tools like social bookmarking, social sharing, link building, blogging etc. these tools promote websites and generate more traffic and increase website rank in search engine.
Although everyone is saying SEO, don't go for it. Since you are new to SEO (no offence) you gonna lose a lot of money buying services you don't need and it takes time to get traffic from the search engine.
the best thing to do in my opinion is make a site promote through twitter and facebook.
then when you have money go for SEO.
Don't add anything to stumbleupon without being active on the site for a period of time. Give some feedback first to other sites on there, thumbs ups, etc. That way they will give whatever you add more strength and you'll receive more views. Well I participate in highly reputable forums and except that some platforms of SMM I am targeting like Facebook and Pinterest. Now I am also thinking to get PPC services for my website because many people told me that it works.
ITs easy to promot your site, if you don't have enough time then you can hire some workers from any good freelance site. They can do wonders for you.
The another way to promote your site is to hire some assistants from any good freelance site and assign them promosional work.
The promotional job can be a defficult one if you keep relying onlt on you. Make a team and then promote.
Promoting is the key to any successful business. Knowing where to promote for best results is important so I assume you are using analysis so you know where the visitors come from so you can spend more time on this one
