How much do you pay to outsource web design tasks?

I am talking about small projects like adding another login here, place another anti-spam there, add a plugin here, add a widget there type of work.

    How much do you pay?
Do you pay based on hour or a fixed rate?

It would probably make more sense to come up with a list of changes needed made and do them all at once with a developer than paying them for one off things like that, you're probably overpaying by doing them individually. I generally charge about $1500 for a small business site, and would charge about $100-$200 for smaller updates. It's at the very least going to be a few hours work for most projects.

I would pay a fixed rate if I would have to outsource the job, but I do myself all the coding and designing work for my websites, hence I coudn't say a figure to pay for it, and since I don't offer these services to others either, the only I can say is that doing-yourself is a good way to save money and get exactly what you want, but needs the willingness and time to learn how to do it

It depends very much on the work.

I recently had someone go through a WP theme, for example, and produce an "add-on" CSS with comments so that I can adjust all the little things I want to on my sites - font size, colours, bits and pieces like that. £20 for about an hour's work (I get "mates rates" though, because I've helped her out in the past).

When I had logos professionally designed for a site, they were about $30-$50, with as many iterations as necessary to get it right. For niche and smaller stuff (i.e. things I throw together to see if they work, rather than approaching as a legitimate business), I just use cooltext.com to produce a simple logo/header. Does the job in most cases, especially if you mess around with it a bit in Paint or Photoshop afterwards!

I threw about $1,000 into a site dev once as well - for a from-scratch design including php programming - before he disappeared and left the work half-finished.

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is not deciding how much it costs. It's finding someone who will do the job properly, rather than just absent-mindedly jury-rig something that isn't reliable, scalable or updateable. And who puts comments in their work. I have yet to find a reliable php coder, for example - most of the ones I talk to are self-taught idiots who don't have a clue.

Easy to say, harder to do... for two reasons:

    1. If you don't worry about the money, you'll end up paying out more than you have.
    2. Finding a REAL "leader in web development" - as opposed to one who SAYS they're a leader - is tougher than it sounds.
