I've seen that it sometimes pays off and sometimes the odds kind of stack up against you. Is it better to be with the tried and tested or should you really make an effort to take risks and put yourself out there? I wonder what you all think about that.

Freelancing really pays off when one is willing to get the most of whatever activity.

Putting as in example freelance writing, getting the most means search for the right gigs to get well-paid jobs rather than just taking whatever assignments comes in the way disregard the price a potential client is willing to pay.

Actually the "average" flat rate per word that many writers get is one cent or less, which makes no sense. However there are many freelance writers that know how to sell themselves and are getting much more per article.

I agree with MyDigitalPoint. Freelance writing is lucrative when done correctly...and with your eyes wide open. For example, a freelance writer should always have private clients, as well as writing for content mills such as Textbroker etc. A good portfolio is a must too, as is knowing your worth and charging the right price for the type of writing you offer. It is a hard business with plenty of rejection but what one client hates, another loves so it is a case of finding your middle ground. I have been writing a long time and I still learn something new every week.

I would think that marketing your freelancing offline would be more profitable. You just have to find the right target market and the best way to approach them. I know a few article writers who claim to get paid more than the $5/500 word articles. That's because they thought they deserved better and went after the higher paying clients.

All good pointers. I agree MyDigitalpint. Maybe I have some improving to do also. Parkers ideas are also spot on. It works either way depending on what your background story is. Thanks all.

Freelancing, by definition, means that you are free to choose who to work for. It's a way to make a living, I agree.

However, from my personal experience, I find that you make a lot more money when you stop being a freelancer and, instead, produce work exclusively for a client or two. So, I would say, freelance, by all means, until you find a client or two who will pay you well for your work. Then concentrate on working for those clients. End of freelancing for the time being.

The biggest problem is to select the type of the freelance job.
