Has anyone set up at trade shows to showcase your products or to provide examples of your services? I am trying to think if this could be a good method of promoting the business.

Its a good way to let people know what is your product i would like to say you should go on.
Risky stuff especially if you're going to pay a lot for your slot. That's because if you do, you'd need to step it up and actually get returns for the effort and money you've put in.
I would say when it comes to promoting business, you should never under estimate the importance of it. As long as it is legal for you to promote your business anywhere and in any way, just do it. Try it. If you won't try, you won't learn and won't earn. So give it a try and see how it works for you. As media is one of the best possible ways to promote your business, I think it will work like a charm. But wait and think about it, even if it doesn't, what do you have to lose? Nothing right? So I would say you should take your chances and try promoting your business in trade shows. In my personal opinion, it has to work and it will.
I've never tried trade shows before, no, mainly because I think that the usually just attract people who are there just to look, and not to look to make a purchase. They invite people who are looking to find something to do to pass the time, and I don't want to be wasting my time marketing my product(s) there.
Trade shows are hard work but you can learn alot about your product and potential clients. Get there early and meet other seasoned trade show attendees, they will show you the ropes. Introduce yourself to people as they walk by, most need an introduction or invite to your table if there is no one there. Go for it, you will learn alot.
I have participated to a lot of trade shows and the results have been mixed. For sure there is cost, preparation, learning but the return on investment is very volatile. So be clear on how the trade show will help you get in touch with customers and if this is the best media. I would say that for a relatively specialized or niche market where you do not know well the key buyers, it can bring you networking benefits and not be too costly. Can you share a little bit about the product and the market ?
It is a good idea but why don;t you juts join in fairs? I think you could have more audience in fairs that in trade shows. I just think that trade shows are harder to organized and you can't about the results.
I think it depends on the product or service you are selling. If it's a physical product or a local service, a trade show may be beneficial. If it's a digital product or a virtual service, then promoting it through the internet would be more applicable.
Festivals is a great opportunity to take advantage. Some of my friends who has tattoo services provide promos everytime there is a festival in our place. Its somehow profitable though.
